'One-Day' course, Saturday, February 25, 9:30am to 4pm, 2012
UBC campus, Irving K Barber Learning Centre
Many religious and spiritual traditions envision a 'better day to come' for humanity -- a New Millennium -- a culminating era of peace, justice and prosperity for the whole world. These bright visions endure, despite the many dark tragedies and atrocities of human history. Usually the 'expected time' or the Future Golden Age is understood as coming after a period of significant trials and reckonings. In the build-up to this promised fulfillment, the world religions all acknowledge a crucial role for human choice and resolve in the unfolding of humanity's future. In this course we explore a rich, comprehensive array of spiritual longings and prophetic writings -- attempting to identify wise and uplifting guidance for today's troubled world -- using an informal lecture-discussion format.
Topics include: (1) Introduction & Native (including Mayan) Visions, (2) Jewish, Zoroastrian & Hindu Visions, (3) Buddhist & Chinese Visions, (4) Christian Visions of the New Millennium,
(5) Islamic Visions of the Day of Renewal, (6) Baha'i Visions of the Most Great Peace.
